JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Lafayette College men's soccer team defeated Saint Peter's on Tuesday afternoon, 3-1, with three Leopards netting their first goals of the season.
Lafayette was led by junior
Benji Grossi who totaled a goal and an assist in the win. Both were his first of the season. The Leopards were also led by juniors
Jon Ford and
Hale Lombard who each also netted a goal in the win. Ford's goal also marked his first collegiate goal.
All three Leopards, along with freshman
Lawrence Aydlett, totaled a team-leading three shots and Grossi recorded a team-leading two on goal. Aydlett, Ford, and sophomore
Connor Dawson also make their first collegiate start in the win.
Lafayette (4-3-1, 0-0-1 PL) struck first in the 12
th minute of action off a goal by Ford, assisted by Grossi, to put the Maroon and White up early in the game. Five minutes later Saint Peter's (2-5, 0-0 MAAC) tied the game at 1-1.
It was then Grossi who gave the Leopards a 2-1 lead, in the 21
st minute of action, firing the ball right passed the Peacocks goalkeeper and into the upper left corner of the net. Lombard followed up six minutes later with a goal of his own to push the Leopards lead out to 3-1.
The Maroon and White added three more shots in the first half but none found the back of the net to add to their lead, sending the game into halftime with the Leopards up 3-1.
The second half proved to be a defensive half for the Leopards as they held the Peacocks to just two shots, while firing off 10 of their own in the second 45 minutes of action. Neither side could find a way to get the ball into the back of the net, securing the Leopards 3-1 road victory.
Lafayette returns to Patriot League action on Saturday, welcoming Boston U. for a 12 p.m. matchup at Oaks. The last time the Leopards and Terriers met was during the spring 2021 season in Boston, which the Leopards won 3-2.
