Women’s Soccer Falls to Lehigh in Heartbreaker

Gretchen Waechter Scores Her Second Goal of the Season

EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette women's soccer team fell to rival Lehigh 2-1 on Wednesday at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.

For the fifth consecutive game the Leopards scored first, this time it was a long strike by freshman Gretchen Waechter that put the Leopards up 1-0 in the 36th minute.  The goal was Waechter's second of the season.

In the 61st minute, a slick turn and cross by Lehigh's Corinne Lyght managed to find Courtney Supp just a few feet away from the goal, where she was able to equalize the score at 1-1.

Then in the 90th minute, Lehigh's Lyght would again put a perfect cross into the box on one hop, setting up Emma Roesing one-on-one with Lafayette goalkeeper Natalie Neumann.  Roesing's shot to the upper left corner of the goal went by the outstretched arms of Neumann resulting in a 2-1 lead for Lehigh.

Lafayette ended the night with nine shots and Lehigh took 17. Six of the Leopard's shots were on goal while the Mountain Hawks had seven that were on target. Lafayette's Riley Dowd and Katie Butler each had two shots, while Gretchen Waechter's one shot resulted in the team's only goal. Melissa Lamanna, Emily Coe, Sara Oswald and Anna Garcia all recorded one shot each.

Lafayette junior goalkeeper Natalie Neumann was credited with five saves.

The Leopards will be home again on Saturday to face American University at 7 p.m. at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.
