EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette women's soccer team fell in a tight match to American University on Saturday at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.
American scored first just a minute and 31 seconds into the match, when Brooke Steel got a shot past Lafayette junior goalkeeper Natalie Neumann. The goal was assisted by Alysa Vazquez.
Lafayette struck back in the seventh minute when a Katie Butler pass found Melissa Lamanna right in front of the goal. It was Lamanna's fourth goal of the season.
In the 29th minute, American regained the lead as Brooke Steel again scored from directly in front of the goal on assists from Alysa Vazquez and Tate Jordan.
The Leopards equalized the match going into the half with a shot by Gretchen Waechter from the right corner of the penalty box off a pass by Lauren Cunningham.
In the 67th minute, the Eagles of American took the lead once again as Tate Jordan scored a goal off an assist by Alysa Vazquez. Then in the 77th minute, American increased its lead to two when Tate Jordan got behind the Lafayette defenders and scored a break-away goal. Emily Smith was credited with the assist for American.
In the 89th minute, Lafayette scored one more time when Gretchen Waechter found Sara Oswald on the doorstep of the goal, and Oswald scored her first goal of the season.
Lafayette and American ended the night with nine shots each. The Leopards had seven on goal and the Eagles had nine on target. Lafayette's Gretchen Waechter had three shots, Melissa Lamanna and Katie Butler had two each, and Sara Oswald and Sophia Hudson had one shot a piece.
Lafayette goalkeeper Natalie Neumann was credited with five saves.
The Leopards will travel to Baltimore, Md. to face Loyola University at 2 p.m. at Ridley Athletic Complex.
