Leopards Drop Midweek Test to Midshipmen

Kitromilides netted his fourth goal of the season, Venezia his first

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Lafayette College men's soccer team dropped its Wednesday night test to the Navy Midshipmen, 3-2, in double overtime.
 
The Leopards were led by senior Marcos Kitromilides and senior Andrew Venezia who each netted a goal. Kitromilides' goal was his fourth of the season and Venezia's was his first.
 
Senior Will Echeverria recorded the Leopards lone assist on the night, assisting on the goal by Kitromilides. The assist was his first of the season.
 
Senior Martin Ssessanga totaled a season-high and team-high five shots, and senior Alex Sutton recorded a season-high five shots between the pipes.
 
Navy (7-1-1, 2-1-0 PL) struck first with two quick shots in the first nine minutes of action, but neither shot was able to get through Sutton and the Leopards defense. Lafayette (5-4-1, 1-1-1 PL) had its first chance of the night in the 12th minute off a shot by Ssessanga, but the ball was blocked and the score remained 0-0.
 
The Midshipmen found the back of the net first in the 13th minute to go up 1-0.
 
The rest of the first half continued to be a defensive battle on both sides as the game headed into halftime with Navy up by one.  
 
12 minutes into the second half, it was Kitromilides, assisted by Echeverria, who sent the ball into the bottom right corner and passed the Midshipmen's' goalkeeper to even the score at 1-1.
 
Navy took a 2-1 lead in the 75th minute, but less than a minute later, the Leopards drew a foul in the box to send Venezia to the line for a penalty kick. He sent the ball passed the Midshipmen's goalkeeper to tie up the game at two goals each.  
 
After neither side scored in the first overtime, the game headed into a second 10 minute overtime period. With three minutes left in the second overtime of the night, Navy found the back of the net to walk away with the 3-2 double overtime victory.
 
The game marked the third time this season that the Leopards have played into overtime, with all three of those games being their three Patriot League games.   
 
Lafayette returns home on Saturday for a 2 p.m. test with Colgate.
