JERSEY CITY, N.J. - The Lafayette women's soccer team collected its first win of the season, defeating Saint Peter's 2-1 on Wednesday at Joseph J. Jaroschak Field.
The Leopards scored first in the 56th minute, when a free kick was sent into the box and then ping-ponged between senior
Riley Dowd and freshman
Chayce Buono before finally being put in the goal by junior
Melissa Lamanna, her second of the season.
Coming quickly on the heels of Lamanna's goal, in the 61st minute a cross by freshman
Gretchen Waechter would find senior
Katie Butler at point blank range to the net and Butler scored her first goal of the season.
In the 88th minute, St. Peter's came one within one goal of the Leopards as Amber Whitley scored and unassisted tally after a Saint Peter's throw in.
Lafayette recorded 12 shots and Saint Peter's had 11. The Leopards had six shots on goal and the Peacocks had four. For the Leopards,
Katie Butler took three shots, with one of them resulting in a goal.
Emily Coe and
Riley Dowd had two shots each, while Lamanna had one shot which resulted in a goal. The remainder of Lafayette's shots were recorded by
Ariana Aliprantis, Waechter, Sophie Hudson and
Michaela Salvati.
Natalie Neumann recorded two saves and
Lindsay Dewar was credited with one in goal.
The Leopards will be back at home on Sunday when they battle NJIT at 2 p.m. at Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.
