Leopards Drop Heartbreaker at Army

Antognoli paced the Leopards with 15 points

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Lafayette College women's basketball team dropped a heartbreaker, 50-46, to the Army West Point Black Knights Saturday in West Point to move to 3-5 in Patriot League action.  
 
Lafayette was led by freshman Abby Antognoli who totaled 15 points, including a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc, and a played a career-high 40 minutes. Freshman Claire Gallagher totaled seven points while senior Naomi Ganpo, sophomore Makayla Andrews, and senior Makaila Wilson each totaled six.
 
Ganpo added a team-leading three steals and two blocks to her stat line. Antongoli and Gallagher both totaled a team-high four assists and Ganpo, Andrews, and Wilson all totaled a team-leading eight rebounds.
 
Lafayette (7-11, 3-5 PL) got on the board first off a jumper from Andrews before Army (10-8, 5-4 PL) tied up the game with 6:30 left to play in the first quarter. Andrews then put in her second basket of the game to spark a 6-0 Lafayette scoring run putting the score at 6-2 with just over two minute left in the quarter.
 
The Black Knights broke the Leopards run with a three point bucket to pull themselves within three, 8-5, and then put in a jumper at the buzzer to send the game into the second quarter with Lafayette holding an 8-7 lead.  
 
Antongoli put in the first bucket for the Leopards of the second quarter to spark a 6-0 Leopards scoring run putting the score at 14-7. Army broke Lafayette's run with a three-point bucket with 5:07 left to play in the quarter pulling within four of the Maroon and White.
 
Freshman Kylie Favours put in a layup to put Lafayette in front by six but, Army responded with an 8-0 scoring run to take a one point lead, 18-17. The Black Knights then added a jumper to put themselves ahead by three at the two minute mark.
 
Gallagher drew a foul and made both of her shots from the charity stripe to pull Lafayette within a point, 20-19, heading into the locker room at the half.
 
Army extended its lead to three at the start of the third quarter off a layup. Antognoli started to help the Leopards chip away at the Black Knights lead with a layup to pull them back within one point, but Army responded with back-to-back three pointers to put themselves ahead 28-21.
 
The Leopards then went on a 5-0 scoring run to pull back within two, 28-26, and then a layup by Ganpo tied up the game at 28-28. Antongoli then hit her third three-point shot of the game to put Lafayette ahead 31-28.
 
Army responded with a layup to pull back within one with 1:44 left to play in the third quarter. Ganpo then drew a foul and made both of her extra shots to put Lafayette ahead by two, but a Black Knight jumper with 41 seconds left in the quarter sent the game into the fourth quarter with the score 32-32.
 
Wilson started off the final ten minutes of action with a layup to put Lafayette in front 34-32. Army drew a foul and made its shot from the charity stripe to pull within one.
 
Ganpo put in a layup to pull Lafayette ahead by three. Army responded with a three-point bucket to tie up the game 36-36 before Antognoli answered with back-to-back baskets from beyond the arc to put Lafayette ahead 42-36.
 
Army outscored Lafayette 8-4 over the next three and a half minutes to pull within a bucket of the Leopards, 46-44.
 
Army then drew a foul and made both of its shots to tie the game up 46-46 with 24 seconds left to play in regulation. Army drew two more fouls and made all of its shots from the charity stripe to secure the 50-46 win.
 
Army's Natalie Stralkus led all scorers with 18 points. Kamryn Hall was the other Black Knight to recorded double figures for Army, totaling 12 points.
 
Lafayette returns home next week for two games in Kirby Sports Center. Tuesday they welcome American to Kirby for a 6 p.m. game and Thursday they welcome Holy Cross for a 6 p.m. game. Both games are make-ups from postponed games earlier in the season.
