Women's Basketball Falls to American

Antognoli led Lafayette with 13 points, Ganpo recorded career-high 15 rebounds

EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette College women's basketball team dropped its game Tuesday night to American University, 58-51, in Kirby Sports Center.
 
The Leopards were led by freshman Abby Antognoli with 13 points. Senior Naomi Ganpo was the other Leopards to total double figure points with 11. Ganpo also totaled a career-high 15 rebounds to record her second double double of the season.
 
American (13-6, 6-3 PL) put in the first bucket of the quarter less than a minute into the game to grab the early 2-0 lead. Senior Makaila Wilson drew a foul and made one of her extra shots to pull Lafayette (7-12, 3-6  PL) within one, 2-1. Ganpo then put in a layup to give Lafayette its first lead of the game, 3-2.
 
Wilson once again drew a foul and headed to the charity stripe, making one of her extra shots to put Lafayette ahead 4-2. Sophomore Makayla Andrews then followed up Wilson's extra shot with a bucket of her own to give Lafayette a 6-2 lead with 7:51 left to play in the quarter. The Eagles responded with a 6-0 run to take an 8-6 lead.
 
Ganpo tied up the game with a layup right out of the first quarter media timeout before American went to the line and made both its extra shots to take a 10-8 lead.  
 
Antongoli evened the score with six seconds left to send the game into the second quarter tied 10-10.
 
The two sides traded buckets to start the second quarter bringing the score to 15-12, Lafayette.  Neither side could break through the opposing side's defense for the next four minutes until it was American that eventually broke through with a 7-0 run to take a 17-15 lead.
 
Wilson tied up the game with a jumper with 3:18 left to play in the half but it was American that headed into the locker room with the 20-17 lead.
 
Wilson put the Leopards in front at the start of the third quarter, 20-19, before the Eagles drew a foul and made both of their extra shots from the charity stripe to take a 22-19 lead. Antgnoli then went on a 3-0 run of her own to tie the game at 22-22.
 
The two sides traded buckets to put the score at 24-24 before American drew back to back fouls and made all four of its extra shots to take a four point lead. The Eagles held control of the game for the rest of the quarter and headed into the final 10 minutes of action with the 33-28 lead.
 
American opened the fourth quarter with two quick baskets before Lafayette responded with a 7-0 run to pull within two, 37-35. American responded with a layup to push its lead back out to four but Gallagher put in a jumper and Antonogoli drew an and-one, making her extra shot to put Lafayette ahead 40-39.
 
American responded with a jumper to put itself up 41-40 and then the two sides traded three-pointers to bring the score to 44-43 in favor of the Eagles with 4:23 left to play.
 
The two sides then traded buckets until the score was tied once again at 48-48, with 2:34 left to play.
 
Ganpo drew a foul and made one of her shots from the charity stripe to put Lafayette ahead by one, 49-48. The Eagles than took a 52-49 lead with 1:33 left to play.
 
Antongoli headed to the line for two with just over a minute to play, and made both her extra shots to pull Lafayette within one, 52-51. American responded with a jumper to extend its lead to 54-51 and then added four more points the secure the 58-51 win Tuesday night.
 
American's Emily Johns led all scorers in the game with 18 points followed closely by Jade Edwards with 14.
 
The Leopards have a quick turnaround as they are set for a matchup with Holy Cross on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Kirby. They will then hit the road for their first battle of the season with Bucknell at 5 p.m. in Lewisburg.
