EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette College women's basketball team dropped its seventh straight game, falling to Holy Cross 59-50 Thursday night in Easton.
The Leopards were led by senior
Naomi Ganpo who totaled her second straight, and third career, double double with a team-high 12 points and team-high 13 rebounds. Senior
Makaila Wilson was the next leading scorer for the Leopards with nine points while sophomore
Makayla Andrews totaled the next highest rebounds with eight.
Lafayette (7-13, 3-7 PL) put in the first bucket to take a 2-0 lead less than a minute into the game. Holy Cross (14-7, 8-2 PL) responded with a three-pointer to take a 3-2 lead a few seconds later. Ganpo and junior
Jessica Booth put in back-to-back buckets to put the score at 6-3 in favor of the home team.
The Crusaders then went on a 4-0 run to take a 7-6 lead and from there hung on to the lead to take the game into the second quarter in front 18-17.
The two sides traded layups to start the second quarter and put the score at 20-19 with Holy Cross still in the lead. The Crusaders then went on a 4-0 run to push the lead out to five.
Booth put in a three-point shot to pull the Leopards within two, 24-22, before drawing a foul and making one of her shots from the charity stripe to pull them within one.
Freshman
Kylie Favours then drained a shot from beyond the arc to put Lafayette back in front, 26-24, with 5:07 left to play in the first half. The Crusaders responded with a jumper to tie up the game at 26-26, but Wilson responded with one of her own to send the game into the half with the Leopards up 28-26.
Holy Cross came out of halftime with back-to-back shots to take a 31-28 lead two minutes into the third quarter. The visitors then stretched out their lead to 38-30 with 5:07 left in the quarter, forcing Lafayette to call a timeout.
The Crusaders made a shot from beyond the arc right out of the timeout putting their lead to 11, before Andrews put in a bucket for the Maroon and White to put the score at 41-32.
Andrews then drew a foul and made both of her shots from the charity stripe to pull the Leopards within seven. Freshman
Abby Antognoli pulled the Leopards within three with 1:47 left to play in the quarter with back-to-back buckets.
Both sides put in one more basket in the quarter to send the game into the final 10 minutes of action with Holy Cross in the lead 43-40.
The Crusaders opened up the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run. Ganpo put in the first bucket of the quarter for Lafayette to put the score at 49-42 with 7:14 left to play. Holy Cross put in one more bucket before Lafayette went on a 6-0 run of its own to put the score at 51-48, Holy Cross.
Holy Cross put in back-to-back baskets to put the score at 56-48 with 1:47 left to play. Ganpo put in one more bucket for the Maroon and White but it was Holy Cross that put in the final three points of the game to take home the 59-50 win.
The Crusader's Avery LaBarbera led all scorers with 22 points. Two other Crusader's totaled double-digits with both Oluchi Ezemma and Cara McCormack recording 10.
Lafayette returns to action on Sunday traveling to Lewisburg for a 5 p.m. game against Bucknell.
