Leopards drop Friday Afternoon Contest at UMBC

O'Boyle records season-high 22 points

BALTIMORE, Md.- The Lafayette men's basketball team dropped a Friday afternoon contest against UMBC, 71-63, at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena.

Lafayette's top performance came through senior forward Leo O'Boyle, who scored a season-high 22 points in 37 minutes. The Scranton, Pa. native shot 47 percent from the field, including a 4-of-9 clip from 3-point range. <>< strong="">Junior forward Kyle Jenkins totaled 16 points on 67 percent shooting while making a pair of three-pointers. He also led the team with eight rebounds while Lafayette out-rebounded the retrievers 30-27.<>

<>< strong="">O'Boyle opened the game with two 3-pointers and a layup, part of Lafayette's 7-0 run in the early going. The flurry of shots ending at 13:26 was Lafayette's largest lead of the game.<>

<>< strong="">Nearing the five-minute mark in the first half, CJ Fulton dropped in seven points on three layups and a free throw and Josh Rivera knocked down two foul shots as Lafayette held a 21-16 lead.

The Retrievers put back a Craig Beaudion 3-pointer and a Jarvis Doles layup at 1:58 to even the score. A Rivera layup, aided by a single free throw, secured a slim Leopard advantage, 24-23, at the halftime buzzer. <>

<>< strong="">The second half saw a burst of UMBC energy, as the Retrievers took their first lead of four points at 18:19 with a 6-0 run. The 31-27 advantage was fueled by Jacob Boonyasith with three free throws and a Colton Lawrence 3-pointer.<>

<>< strong="">Freshman Ryan Pettit assisted Fulton to keep the Maroon and White within that margin of four at the 16-minute media timeout. An O'Boyle layup and a 3-pointer from Jenkins closed the gap to one (14:59).<>

<>< strong="">The Retrievers made a 13-0 run and took an 11-point advantage by 12:32, highlighted by four 3-point shots. The Leopard scoring drought ended with a Justin Vander Baan dunk at 10:05, with UMBC leading 47-37.<>

<>< strong="">Both teams failed to find the net once more until the eight-minute mark when O'Boyle sank two free throws. UMBC's Picarelli matched him to earn the largest Retriever lead, 52-39.  O'Boyle, Jenkins and Pettit put up another combined nine points, sandwiching a UMBC floating jump shot, to earn a 9-2 run at 5:52.<>

<>< strong="">Junior Ryan Zambie recorded his first points for this game, adding a layup in his second appearance this season. Fulton followed up with his own layup to close the UMBC advantage at six, 58-52 (4:33).<>

<>< strong="">A minute later, down to five seconds on the shot clock, Jenkins put back a crucial 3-pointer. The Higganum, Conn. native added a pair of free throws on the next play to inch within one point of the Retrievers, 58-57.<>

<>< strong="">The Retrievers got to the line to seal the game, making free throws of their own, four from Lawrence, to re-take the lead with 2:20 on the clock, 63- 57.<>

<>< strong="">Jenkins added a set of layups, but a 3-pointer by both UMBC's Picarelli and Beaudion kept Lafayette at bay 69-63 with 30 seconds remaining. Beaudion made two more free throws for a final score of 71-63 in favor of the Retrievers.<>

<>< strong="">UMBC shot 43.1 percent from the field and had 16 points in the paint, 30 off the bench and 10 off turnovers. Picarelli led the Retrievers with 19 points, shooting 6-10 from the field and 55.6 percent from the 3-point range.The Maroon and White shot 49 percent from the field and had 32 points in the paint and 24 off the bench. The Leopards made a season-high 82 percent (9-of-11) of their free throws this afternoon<>

<>< strong="">The Leopards remain at UMBC for a neutralsite contest against Central Connecticut State on Saturday at noon.<>
