BALTIMORE, Md.- The Lafayette men's basketball team defeated the Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils 55-50 on Saturday, netting
Mike Jordan his first career victory as the 19
th head coach of the Leopards. The teams met at UMBC's Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena in Baltimore, Md. for a neutral site contest.
Senior
Leo O'Boyle led the Leopards for the second day in a row, shooting 4-for-10 from the field to total 16 points. The Scranton, Pa. native was perfect from the free-throw line (5-5), and shot 3-6 from behind the three-point line.
Kyle Jenkins recorded 14 points on 62 percent shooting, knocking down two 3-pointers and both of his free throws.
Sophomore
Justin Vander Baan and Jenkins opened the scoring for the Leopards, followed by a
Josh Rivera layup and free throw for a 7-3 lead at the 14-minute mark.
Lafayette began a 12-0 run, kicked off by both an O'Boyle and a Jenkins 3-pointer. The Blue Devils called a timeout as Jenkins made a layup, assisted by Fulton, to extend the lead to 16-3 (11:21).
The Maroon and White offense continued to pepper the rim, giving the Leopards a 21-3 lead at the 9:37 mark.
Central Connecticut State put in a free throw and two 3-pointers to stop the scoring streak with eight minutes left in the first half. Both teams then traded 3-pointers, with one apiece from O'Boyle and
TJ Berger, 27-13 (5:22).
A hook shot and a jumper from the Blue Devils ran the clock down to two minutes, setting them 12 points behind the Leopards.
Two O'Boyle free throws and a Fulton jumper revved up the Leopards once more, giving them a 31-17 lead at the half.
Jenkins began the second half with a dunk just over a minute into the period.
O'Boyle snuck in a layup before Central Connecticut State recorded their first points of the half, kicking off a 7-0 run, for a score of 35-24 in favor of the Leopards at 15:37.
Jenkins ended the drought with a 3-pointer just one minute later, 38-27. Berger added one more at 12:52 to extend the Leopard lead to 41-27.
Two Jenkins free throws before yet another Berger 3-pointer to keep Lafayette ahead at 46-32 (9:53).
Junior
Eric Sondberg saw his first minutes on the court this season, sinking a 3-pointer at 7:01. Sondberg's bucket signaled Lafayette's largest lead of the game at 51-32.
The Blue Devils made a final 16-2 run, with the Blue Devils coming back to within one possession of the Leopards. A Fulton layup sealed the victory, 55-50, with 22 seconds remaining.
Central Connecticut State shot 33 percent from the field, and 25 of its 50 points came off the bench. Davonte Sweatman led the Blue Devils with 13 points, shooting 5-for-8 from the field and 60 percent from 3-point range.
The Maroon and White shot 42 percent from the field, and an effective 39 percent from three-point range.
Lafayette held a slim advantage in rebounds, 31-29, with the Leopards grabbing five off the offensive glass.
The Leopards will host coach Jordan's alma mater, Penn, on Tuesday, Nov. 22 with tip-off at 8:30 p.m. inside Kirby Sports Center.
