Men’s Basketball Takes Penn to Overtime Thriller

O’Boyle leads three players in double figures with 18

EASTON, Pa.- Lafayette took Penn to overtime on Tuesday night at Kirby Sports Center, but the Quakers pulled away for a 74-68 final.

Lafayette's top performance came through Leo O'Boyle, totaling 16 points while shooting 4-for-6 from the field, with seven free throws in minutes limited by foul trouble. Jon Brantley (13) chipped in 13 points on three three-pointers while C.J. Fulton added 12 points and five assists.

Lafayette started off the game with a 9-0 run, the Leopards' largest lead of the game, to force the Quakers into an early timeout at 17:17.

Penn got on the board with a set of free throws by Jordan Dingle. The Quakers retaliated with an 8-0 run of their own by the 13-minute mark to lead 9-8.

O'Boyle, Fulton and Rivera continued matching the Quakers' possessions. Three free throws by O'Boyle kept the Leopards in close contention, 25-24, with three minutes left in the first half.

A 3-pointer and driving layup from Fulton concluded the first half with the Leopards leading 29-27.

Brantley scored the first bucket of the second half, seeing his first minutes this season coming back from an injury.

Ryan Zambie gave the Leopards a spark off the bench. He knocked down 3-of-3 shots from the field for a career-high nine points. The Plano, Texas native also hauled in a career-high six rebounds in 18 minutes of action.

A spurt of free throws propelled Penn to a 36-31 lead (13:09). Brantley followed up the scoreless streak with a 3-pointer 30 seconds later to close the gap to two points.

The Quakers made a 6-0 run, ended by a 3-pointer from Ryan Zambie at 10:09. Brantley added two 3-pointers of his own at 8:15, but Penn kept the lead, 47-43.

A pair of free throws from Zambie and Fulton brought the Maroon and White within six, 55-49, with five minutes remaining in the contest.

A Jenkins layup and a pair of free throws by Vander Baan put the Leopards two behind the Quakers at 3:18, 57-55.

Zambie and Justin Vander Baan scored on back-to-back layups and O'Boyle netted two free throws to tie the game at 61-61 with 22 seconds left on the clock. Both teams attempted last-second shots before heading into overtime.

The Quakers opened the extra session on a 7-3 run and outscored the Leopards 13-7 in overtime for the 74-68 final.

Penn shot 43.5 percent from the field and had 40 points in the paint and 20 off the bench. Dingle led the Quakers with 22 points, eight of which came on free throws. The Maroon and White shot 37.5 percent from the field and had 22 points in the paint.

The Leopards will kick off another five-game non-conference slate at Penn State on Friday.
