Antognoli's Career-High Leads Leopards to Win Over Loyola

Antognoli paced all scorers with a career-high 20 points, three other Leopards totaled double figures

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Lafayette College women's basketball program defeated the Loyola University Maryland Greyhounds, 77-61,Wednesday night. The win completed the regular season sweep for the Leopards and secured their eighth-straight win over the Greyhounds.
 
The Leopards were led by freshman Abby Antognoli who totaled a career-high 20 points. The freshman also added two rebounds and three assists.
 
Senior Naomi Ganpo, sophomore Makayla Andrews, and freshman Claire Gallagher also all recorded double figures with 11 points each. Ganpo also totaled a team-leading seven rebounds and two blocks.  
 
As a team, the Leopards recorded a season best 55.0 three-point percentage, going 11-for-20, as well as recorded a season best 53.7 field goal percentage going 29-for-54.
 
Senior Makaila Wilson put Lafayette (9-15, 5-9 PL) on the board first off a layup less than 15 seconds into the game. Antognoli than added a shot from beyond the arc to put Lafayette ahead by five.
 
Loyola (4-20, 1-13 PL) got on the board with a jumper but the Greyhounds bucket was followed up by a bucket from Wilson to put Lafayette ahead 7-2.
 
The Greyhounds added a bucket while Lafayette added two to put the score at 11-5, Lafayette, heading into the first media timeout.
 
Antognoli and Gallagher came out of the timeout with back-to-back three-point shots to put Lafayette ahead by 12.  Loyola added a bucket but freshman Kylie Favours responded with a shot from beyond the arc to put Lafayette ahead 20-7.
 
Gallagher added one more bucket to send the game into the second quarter with Lafayette holding a 22-7 lead.
 
Ganpo started off the second quarter with a layup for the Leopards, but Loyola responded with a 6-0 run to put the score at 24-13. Lafayette then went on a 4-0 run of its own to put the score at 28-13.
 
Lafayette added 14 more points in the half to send the game into halftime with a 42-24 lead.
 
The Greyhounds struck first to open up the second half, but Wilson responded right after the Greyhounds basket with a jumper, putting the score at 44-26. The Greyhounds then pulled the score within 14 with a 4-0 run before Gallagher made a shot from beyond the arc to put Lafayette's lead out to 17.
 
With the score 51-37, Ganpo put in a layup and then drew the foul for an extra shot. She made her extra shot to put Lafayette up 54-37 with 2:28 left in the third quarter.
 
The Leopards continued to push out their lead, and the game headed into the fourth quarter with the score 62-45.
 
Favours started off the fourth quarter with a three-point shot to put the Leopards ahead by 20. The Greyhounds than went on a 9-0 to pull within 11, 65-54.
 
Lafayette responded with a 7-0 run, sparked by Antongoli's fourth three-point bucket of the game, to put Lafayette ahead 72-54 with just over two minutes to play in the game.
 
Both sides traded two more buckets and the Greyhounds added one more in the final minutes of the game, but Lafayette was able to cruise to a 77-61 victory in Baltimore.
 
Loyola was led by senior Taleah Dixon with 14 points and freshman Lex Therien with 10 rebounds. Therien also recorded double figures with 13.  
 
Lafayette returns to Kirby Sports Center for a two-game home stretch. The Leopards are set to welcome Bucknell on Saturday for a 2 p.m. game and Boston University on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. game.
