Leopards' Comeback Falls Short in Loss to Bison

Antognoli and Andrews led the Leopards with 14 points

EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette College women's basketball team dropped a close 68-60 overtime game to Bucknell on Saturday afternoon in Kirby Sports Center.
 
The Leopards were led by freshman Abby Antognoli and sophomore Makayla Andrews who each totaled 14. Senior Naomi Ganpo led the squad in rebounds with six.
 
Bucknell (19-7, 10-5 PL) put in the first points of the game after drawing a foul and making both extra shots. Andrews then tied up the game with a jumper with just under seven minutes to play in the first quarter. The Bison drew another foul and made one of their extra shots to take a 3-2 lead.
 
The two sides traded buckets to put the score at 6-5, with Lafayette out in front, before the Leopards took a 8-5 lead off a jumper by Andrews with under four minutes to play in the quarter.
 
Booth drew a foul and made one of her extra shots to put Lafayette ahead by four before Bucknell maintained control the rest of the quarter and sent the game into the second 10 minutes of the game with the Bison leading by one, 12-11.
 
Bucknell opened up the second quarter with a 5-0 run to take a 17-11 lead. Sophomore Kayla Drummond broke the Bison's scoring run to put the score at 17-13.
 
The Bison extended their lead to 23-13 before it was Drummond again who broke the Bison's run to put the score at 23-15. Bucknell then added two points and freshman Kylie Favours countered the Bison's shot with a three-point bucket to put the score at 25-18.
 
The two sides traded buckets to end the first half with the score 27-20 in favor of the visitors.
 
Booth started off the third quarter for the Leopards with a layup to cut Bucknell's lead down to five. Bucknell responded with a shot from beyond the arc to put the score at 30-22. A layup by Ganpo and two extra shots by Antognoli then pulled Lafayette within four, 30-26.
 
From there the Bison held on to the lead to send the game into the fourth quarter 45-35.
 
Bucknell made the first bucket in the final 10 minutes of regulation to go up by 12. Three points by Andrews, a jumper and a bucket from the charity stripe, then sparked the Leopards to start to chip away at the Bison's lead and pull the score within nine.   
 
The visitors put in a layup to put the score at 49-38 before Lafayette exploded for a 7-0 run to pull within four. The two sides then traded buckets until the score stood at 55-50, in favor of Bucknell, with 1:44 left to play in the fourth quarter.
 
Antongoli made a bucket from beyond the arc to pull Lafayette within two, 55-53, with 36 seconds left on the clock and then with two seconds left, Andrews drew a foul and made both extra shots to tie the game up at 55, forcing overtime.
 
Both teams jumped out to hot start in the five minute overtime period. With the score at 59-59 with 2:57 left to play, the Bison went on a 5-0 scoring run to take a 64-59 lead. Ganpo was fouled, headed to the line for two and made one of her extra shots to put the score at 64-60 with 31 seconds left.
 
Bucknell put in the final four points of the game to head back to Lewisburg with the 68-60 overtime victory.
 
The Bison were led by Taylor O'Brien who led all scorers with 23 points. Ceceila Collins was the other Bison to find herself in double figure points with 16.
 
Up next for the Leopards is their final home test of the regular season as they are set to welcome Boston University on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. matchup. Wednesday's game is Senior Day and the program will honors its three seniors, Nicole Johnson, Makaila Wilson and Naomi Ganpo for their four years of hard work and dedication to the program.
