PHILADELPHIA, Pa.- The Lafayette women's lacrosse team traveled to Drexel this Sunday to open their season, coming off a shortened conference-only schedule last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Leopards were defeated by the Dragons for a final score of 16-4.
Drexel scored the first two goals of the game (14:49 and 10:51) with one from Bednarik shortly after obtaining the first draw control and the other by Jarema off a free position shot. The Dragons are shut down by Lafayette sophomore goalkeeper
Lexie Coldiron multiple times before Simpson puts back their third at 10:01 and Harris tallies a fourth at 5:18.
Freshman midfielder
Sophia Spallone put Lafayette on the board with 1:13 left in the first quarter, assisted by
Sarah Bennett. This is the Leopards' first goal of the season, as well as Spallone's first collegiate goal under the Maroon and White.
Drexel answers at the start of the second quarter, again from Harris off a free position shot (14:11) before she assists Jarema at 13:47. The Dragon's seventh goal came off a fast break at 11:07 before Harris finishes a hat trick at 10:36.
Lafayette leads with five draw controls and is 1-1 in clears this quarter so far. Coldiron continues to make some key saves before Drexel calls timeout. The Dragons come out pressing offensively to find their next goals at 6:15, 5:47 and 3:09.
Lafayette gets a man-up opportunity with forty seconds left in the half due to a Drexel card on Jarema. The Leopards take full advantage of this to add their second goal, coming from sophomore
Clare Culligan at 0:20.
The third quarter gets underway as Drexel's Harris scores at 12:46 and 8:52, which will start the running clock. The Dragons net their fourteenth at 3:34 from Dean.

Drexel opens the final quarter with a quick goal at 14:36 from Grady.
At 6:10, senior attacker
Olivia Cunningham sent in a rocket past Drexel's goalkeeper, Fritsch, for her first of the season. The Dragons counter at 4:21 to end the game.
Drexel held the final advantage in shots (26-21), ground balls (21-15), draw controls (8-7) and saves (10-5).
Lafayette had two goalkeepers defend the net in today's game; Coldiron made five saves and Terraciano had zero, facing a relentless Dragon offense.
The Leopards are back in action for their home opener versus La Salle in Fisher Stadium this Saturday at 11 a.m.
