Lafayette Drops Saturday Afternoon Game to VMI

Ciuffreda went 3 for 4 with three doubles

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Lafayette College baseball team dropped the second game of a three game series to VMI, 13-7, on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Maroon and White were led by junior Pete Ciuffreda who went 3 for 4 with three doubles. Starting pitcher junior Jake Bloss went three innings with four strikeouts.
 
VMI (3-3, 0-0 SoCon) scored first in the top of the third on a two-run home run to take a 2-0 lead.
 
Lafayette (0-6, 0-0 PL) responded in the top of the fifth to take the lead after freshman Kaleb Willis led off the inning with a walk to put the lead-off batter on base. The next batter up, sophomore Justin Grech, walked to put runners on first and second with no outs. Freshman Easton Brenner was then hit by a pitch to load the bases.
 
Ciuffreda than doubled to bring both Grech and Willis home to put the score at 2-2. Brenner advanced to third and then to home on an error by the Keydets shortstop to give Lafayette the 3-2 lead.
 
Senior Dylan Minghini than reached on a fielding error by VMI's third baseman bringing Ciuffreda home to put the score at 4-2 in favor of Lafayette. Minghini than came home on an error by the Keydets shortstop to put the score at 5-2, Lafayette.
 
The Keydets added three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 5-5 and then added seven runs in the bottom of the sixth and one run in the bottom of the eighth to take a 13-5 lead.
 
Lafayette attempted a comeback in the top of the ninth after Brenner started off the inning with a single to left field. Ciuffreda than followed up Brenner's single with a double to right center, scoring Brenner and putting the score at 13-6.
 
Minghini than doubled down the left field line with no outs to score Ciuffreda, but the Keydets were able to get the next three Leopard batters in order to secure the 13-7 victory Saturday afternoon.
 
The Leopards and Keydets will close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
