Chmielewski records two home runs in Sunday's game

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Lafayette College baseball team dropped the last game of a three-game series to VMI on Sunday afternoon.

The Leopards were led by junior Kyle Chmielewski who went 2 for 3 with two home runs and freshman Carter Dorighi went 1 for 4 with one run.

Starting pitcher senior Kyle Subers went 4.1 innings, striking out four.

VMI (4-3, 0-0 SoCon) struck first in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead. Lafayette (0-7, 0-0 PL) tied the game up in the top of the second off a solo home run to left field by Chmielewski. The home run marked his first of the season.

Lafayette tried to bring more runs across home plate and keep the offense moving as sophomore Patrick Vandenbergh, the next batter up, drew a walk. Junior Seif Ingram then singled to left field, advancing Vandenbergh to second with two outs, but senior Zach Savage flied out to center field to end the inning.

The Keydets then added a run in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead.

The Leopards struck again in the top of the fourth after Dorighi started off the inning with a single and then advancing to second on an interference call. Chmielewski then hit his second home run of the game to score both him and Dorighi, and put Lafayette back in the lead 3-2.

The home team took control the rest of the game, adding five runs in the fifth, two in the sixth and four in the eighth to earn the 13-3 victory and series sweep.

Lafayette is back in action on Tuesday as the Leopards are set to host Rider for a 3:30 p.m. game. The Lafayette Nine will then travel back down to Virginia on Friday to play VCU, William and Mary, and Richmond over the weekend.
