PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – The Lafayette baseball team defeated Rider, 11-2, on Tuesday afternoon for its first win of the 2022 season.
The Leopards were led by junior
Pete Ciuffreda who went 3 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs, and senior
Dylan Minghini who went 2 for 4 with two home runs and five RBIs.
Junior pitcher
Nolan Morr went seven innings with nine strikeouts earning his first win of the season. Junior
Jordan Yoder came in for two innings of relief, striking out three.
Lafayette (1-7) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first after freshman
Easton Brenner started off the inning reaching base and advancing to third on an error by Riders (5-2) centerfielder. Ciuffreda then homered to bring both him and Brenner home.
With two outs in the bottom of the second, junior
Seif Ingram singled to put a runner on base for the Leopards. Sophomore
Justin Grech followed Ingram's single with a single of his own and Ingram advanced to third to put runners on the corners. Brenner was then hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Ciuffreda than singled to bring home both Grech and Ingram putting Lafayette in front 4-0.
Rider scored its first run of the game to put the score at 4-1 in the top of the fourth after an error by the Leopards centerfielder advanced the runner home.
The Leopards added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-1 lead off a home run by Minghini, and then added one more run in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-1 lead heading into the sixth.
Rider added one more run in the top of the sixth to put the score at 8-2.
With two outs in the bottom of the eight, Brenner reached first on an error by Rider's shortstop. Ciuffreda than tripled to score Brenner and put Lafayette ahead by seven. Then with Ciuffreda on third, Minghini hit his second home run of the game to put the score at 11-2.
Rider was unable to put any runs across home plate in the top of the ninth as Lafayette secured its first win of the season.
The Lafayette Nine is back in action on Friday, traveling to Richmond, Va., for a 3 p.m. game against VCU.
