BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lafayette College women's basketball team defeated Lehigh, 65-61, on Saturday night in Stabler Arena for its second-straight victory.
The Leopards were led by sophomore
Makayla Andrews who recorded a career-high 23 points to go along with seven rebounds and two steals. Junior
Jessica Booth also totaled double figure points with 13 to go along with three assists and four rebounds. Senior
Makaila Wilson led the team in rebounds with 10.
Lafayette (11-16, 7-10 PL) jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead before Lehigh (18-10, 10-7 PL) put in a three-point basket to put the score at 4-3.
The two sides traded buckets to put the score at 6-5, Lafayette, before Andrews put in back-to-back baskets to put Lafayette ahead 10-5. Both sides added one more basket to send the game into the second quarter with Lafayette leading 12-8.
The Leopards opened up the second quarter with a 6-0 run to put themselves ahead by 10. Lehigh put in its first bucket of the quarter, a three-point shot, with 6:17 left to play in the quarter cutting Lafayette's lead down to seven. The Mountain Hawks then put in a jumper to pull within five.
The two sides continued to exchange buckets until with 3:05 left to play in the half, three shots from the charity stripe by the Mountain Hawks put the score at 25-19. The Leopards pushed their lead back out to eight with 48 seconds left to play, before the Mountain Hawks put in the final bucket of the quarter to send the game into halftime with Lafayette leading by six.
Lehigh battled back at the start of the third quarter to pull the score within three 35-32. Lafayette pushed its lead back out to seven, 39-32, before Lehigh went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 39-39.
Freshman
Claire Gallagher broke the tie with a shot from beyond the arc to put the score at 42-39, Lafayette. The Leopards added five more points in the quarter and Lehigh added four to send the game into the final 10 minutes of action with the Leopards leading 48-44.
Both sides put in two baskets to start the fourth quarter before Lafayette went on a 5-0 run to take a 57-48 lead. Lehigh responded with back-to-back buckets to pull within five. The Leopards then pushed their lead back out to nine, 61-52, with thirty seconds left on the clock.
A three-point basket by Lehigh cut Lafayette's lead to six and then a shot from the charity stripe put Lafayette's lead back to seven. Lehigh than pulled back within two, 63-61.
With a second left on the clock, Gallagher headed to the line for two extra shots and made both, to secure Lafayette's 65-61 victory in Stabler Arena Saturday night.
Lehigh was led by sophomore Mackenzie Kramer who led all scorers in the game with 24 points. Senior Emma Grothaus was the only other Mountain Hawk to totaled double figure points recording 12 to go along with a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Maroon and White will close out their regular season slate on Wednesday in Washington, D.C. at 7 p.m. against American. The Patriot League Tournament is set to begin on Saturday, March 5.
