Leopards' Comeback Attempt Falls Short Sunday

Lafayette and Wofford will wrap up the series Monday at 3:30 p.m.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Lafayette College baseball team dropped the second game of its three-game series to the Wofford College Terriers on Sunday afternoon, 9-2.

The Leopards were led by junior Pete Ciuffreda who went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and freshman Michael Zarrillo who went 1-for-3 with one run and one RBI. Ciuffreda's home run was his third of the season.

Starting pitcher senior Kyle Subers went 5.1 innings with four strikeouts.

Wofford (9-7) took a quick 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Ciuffreda then put Lafayette (2-12) on the board in the top of the second with a solo home run to cut Wofford's lead down the three.

The Leopards added one more run in the top of the fifth to cut Wofford's lead in half after Zarillo doubled with one out and senior Zach Savage doubled to right center to bring him home.

Ciuffreda reached base on an error by the Terriers in the sixth inning to try to spark a comeback attempt for the Leopards. Two batters later, freshman Carter Dorighi singled through the left side to advance Ciuffreda. Dorighi then stole second and Ciuffreda stole third, opening up first base for Zarrillo. Zarrillo drew a walk to load the bases with two outs, but Seif Ingram struck out swinging to end the inning.

The Terriers added five runs in the seventh to take a 9-2 lead and got the Leopards in order in the eighth and ninth innings to secure the victory.

Wofford was led by senior Brennen Dorighi going 2-for-3 with one run and three RBIs. Starting pitcher fifth-year Josh Vitus went 4.2 innings, striking out seven.

Lafayette and Wofford will wrap up the three-game series on Monday at 3:30 p.m. The Lafayette Nine will then continue their road swing with a 4 p.m. game at UNC Asheville on Tuesday and a 6 p.m. game at Eastern Tennessee State University on Wednesday.
