DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Lafayette College baseball team dropped a 13-2 decision at Davidson on Saturday afternoon.
The Leopards were led by junior
Pete Ciuffreda who went 1-for-4 with two RBIs, sophomore
Justin Grech who was 1-for-3 with a run scored and freshman
Easton Brenner who was 1-for-3 and also scored a run. Starting pitcher senior
Kyle Subers went three innings as did
Joe Skapinetz in relief.
Jacob Ciccone finished things off on the hill for the Leopards, throwing the final two innings.
Lafayette (3-16) opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Leadoff batter Grech was hit by a pitch on the second pitch of the game and then advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Brenner drew a walk. Both Grech and Brenner then advanced a base on another wild pitch. Still with no outs in the inning, Ciuffreda hit a two-RBI single to right center field, allowing Grech and Brenner to score the first two runs of the game.
Davidson (16-3) quickly struck back, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Wildcats then added three runs in the second inning to take a 7-2 lead.
The Leopards had runners in scoring position again in the third. Grech singled and stole second to leadoff the inning. A single to left field by senior
Dylan Minghini sent Grech to third, but Davidson was able to wriggle out of the jam as pitcher Blake Hely got freshman
Carter Dorighi to ground out to second base, ending the inning.
Davidson added single runs to their tally in the third, fourth and fifth innings, and scored two runs in the sixth, increasing its lead to 12-2.
In the top of the seventh, Lafayette again had an opportunity to strike back. Senior
Evan Kiah walked and Grech reached again on an error. The Leopards had two runners on with only one out. However, Brenner and Ciuffreda were not able to reach base and the Leopards stranded a runner in scoring position.
Davidson expanded its lead with another run in the bottom of the seventh to push the final to 13-2.
The Wildcats were led by Trevor Candelaria who went 4-for-5 with a home run, two doubles and an RBI and Henry Koehler who went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and four RBIs. Starting pitcher Blake Hely went 6.0 innings, striking out 10 while picking up his third win of the season.
