DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Lafayette College baseball team dropped its final game of the weekend to Davidson, 14-9, on Sunday afternoon in North Carolina.
The Leopards were led by senior
Dylan Minghini who went 2-for-5 with a home run, one run and five RBIs, freshman
Carter Dorighi who went 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI, and junior
Pete Ciuffreda who went 1-for-2 with two runs and one RBI. Starting pitcher junior
Jake Bloss went 3.2 innings.
Davidson (17-3) opened the scoring in the first inning with a solo home run to right field on the second pitch of the game.
Lafayette (3-17) plated its first run of the game in the second inning. Dorighi singled to left field and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Junior
Kyle Chmielewski reached on an error by the Wildcats' third baseman, which scored Dorighi from second and tied the game 1-1.
In the third inning, the Leopards struck for three runs. Freshman
Easton Brenner started the inning with a double off the left center field wall. Ciuffreda followed with a bloop single into left field. Minghini emptied the bases with a deep drive to left that cleared the fence for a three-run home run, giving the Leopards a 4-1 lead.
Davidson answered with two runs of its own in the fourth inning, as the Wildcats scored on a bases-loaded single, cutting the Leopards' lead to 4-3. In the fifth inning, the Wildcats again loaded the bases and pushed eight runs across the plate for the 11-4 lead.
The Leopards started the sixth with freshman
Michael Zarrillo drawing a walk. Senior
Evan Kiah singled to right field. Sophomore
Justin Grech reached on an error by the Wildcats' third baseman, which scored Zarrillo. Brenner was hit by a pitch, which loaded the bases with only one out. Ciuffreda walked, scoring Kiah from third, and then Minghini doubled down the left field line, scoring two more Leopard runs. A sacrifice bunt by Dorighi gave Lafayette its fifth run of the inning, making the score 11-9.
The Wildcats added to their lead, scoring two more runs in the sixth and another run in the eighth, making the score 14-9.
The Leopards are scheduled to host Saint Peter's at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Kamine Stadium for the home opener.
