Late Leopards’ Comeback Falls Short

Six different players had hits for the Maroon and White

BALTIMORE, Md. – Lafayette brought the tying run to the plate with two outs in the seventh inning, but could not complete the comeback in a 6-3 loss to Towson on Saturday afternoon at the UMBC Invite.

Trailing 6-3, Lafayette faced two outs in the inning. No. 9 hitter Erica Brasher extended the game with an infield single. As the order turned over, Natasha Miner came to the plate and took a pitch for the team for the second time in the game to put runners on first and second. The next batter, Harlie Bickett, battled her way through a 13-pitch at bat before lining out to right field to end the game.

Towson grabbed an early lead that it did not relinquish when the Tigers scored a pair of runs on Cori Jones' double. Towson added three more in the fifth inning, two via a home run by Chloe Poulich.

In the top of the sixth, Lafayette made a push to close the gap. With the bases loaded and one out, Julia Roman drove in a pair of runs with a single to right field that scored Bickett (single) and Miner (hit by pitch). Kaili Reitano, who started both games on Saturday at second base, cut the deficit to 5-3 following her sac fly that plated Grace Harvey.

Towson added another run in the home half of the sixth via a Briana Ramirez infield single. That score was aided by a Leopard error to start the inning.

Jacqueline Cal threw 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on eight hits for the loss. Morrigan Gardiner tossed the final 1.2 innings, giving up one run on two hits. Julia Jackson held Lafayette to three runs on six hits over seven innings.

Lafayette closes out the tournament on Sunday, playing host UMBC at noon.
