Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Iona

Romano and Culligan each earn a hat trick for the Lepoards

EASTON, Pa. - The Lafayette women's lacrosse team lost to Iona 15-10 on Saturday in Fisher Stadium.

Iona opened the contest with three unanswered goals (12:26, 11:42, 8:34). The Leopards fired back with two of their own at 5:30 from junior midfielder Katie Chiasson and 0:56 from sophomore midfielder Abby Romano.

The second period saw the most goals of the game for both teams, with Iona netting six with five for Lafayette. Romano scored her second at 13:41 and senior attacker Olivia Cunningham added her first at 12:19.

Sophomore midfielder Claire Culligan and junior attacker Genevieve Strobel followed at 8:14 and 6:17, respectively. Romano completed her hat trick and final Lafayette goal of the first half at 4:22.

The Gaels netted two shots before Lafayette matched them the rest of the third quarter; Strobel and Clare Culligan were the scoring duo (4:26, 0:41).

The Leopards had a lone goal by Chiasson at 4:54 to finish off the team scoring. Two Lafayette players, Romano and Culligan, recorded hat tricks on the  afternoon, with three scoring more than one goal. Sarah Bennett, Romano, McLachlan and Chiasson all had one assist, while Cunningham had two.

The Maroon and White trailed in shots (43-25), draw controls (19-10) and free position shots (6-11 to 3-3), while having the advantage in ground balls (17-11) and clears (18-18 to 11-12). Both teams made nine turnovers.

Lafayette's Lexie Coldiron made 11 saves in the loss with just about three taking place in each quarter. Her Iona counterpart, Sophia Votto, made seven.

Saturday's game was dedicated to Athlete Ally, an on-campus organization striving towards teaching and informing student-athletes about the LGBT community as a way to end homophobia and transphobia in athletics. .

The Leopards return to Fisher Stadium on Wednesday, facing Fairfield at 7:30 p.m. for the One Love game.
