Third Quarter Streak Stops Women’s Lacrosse

Romano nets second consecutive hat trick

EASTON, Pa.- The Lafayette women's lacrosse team was defeated by Fairfield on Wednesday, 20-12.

Lafayette took an early lead in the first quarter, with junior attacker Meghan McLachlan scoring at 13:41 during the team's first possession. Sophomore midfielder Clare Culligan added a second just two minutes later, assisted by McLachlan. Junior midfielder Kerry Tuorto put the Leopards up by three at 10:32.

Fairfield capitalized off a fast break to find its first of the game at 3:50. The Stags put back their second at 3:31 and third at 1:34 to even the score.

Sophomore midfielder Abby Romano took on a 1v1 to take a distance shot that put the Leopards up by one at 13:54 in the second quarter.

Fairfield's Horning ties the game at four a-piece at 11:06, but Lafayette fired back with a rebound shot by freshman midfielder Sophia Spallone (10:43).

Romano made her second of the game at 7:02 with a shot from the far right of the goal. Fairfield was able to convert a shot by Kozak at 5:02 and by Rowe at 3:07 after Lafayette's freshman goalkeeper Molly Terraciano put a stop to a few earlier attempts.

The Stags took their first lead of the game with just over two minutes left in the quarter. Fairfield lengthened it to four (1:45, 1:13, 0:25) before Spallone gave an answer with just eight seconds to go before the half.

Fairfield's Grefenstette netted their eleventh goal at 11:54, while Doody added another at 11:26. The Stags quickly put themselves eight goals ahead of the Leopards in the next few minutes.

Romano netted her second consecutive hat trick of the season at 8:14, ending the Stags scoring streak. However, Fairfield answered at 5:08 and 4:37.

At the start of the final quarter, the Leopards trailed by nine. It quickly turned to 10 after Doody found her way past Terraciano (13:42) and Kozak fought her way through the Leopard defense (10:20).

Spallone earned her first career hat trick at 8:11. The Stags retaliated at 5:55.

Senior attacker Olivia Cunningham made Lafayette's first double-digit goal of the night, assisted by McLachlan (4:25). McLachlan scored her very own with under 30 seconds to play. Caroline Garti was able to convert a final free position shot to finish the game.

The Maroon and White trailed in shots (36-33), caused turnovers (15-5), ground balls (14-11) and clears (19-21 to 13-15).

Lafayette's Terraciano made six saves in the loss, while her Fairfield counterpart, Casey Collins, made 11.

Wednesday's game was dedicated to One Love, a national non-profit organization that has the goal of ending relationship abuse by empowering young people with the tools and resources they need to see the signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships as well as bringing life-saving prevention education to their communities.

The Leopards return to Fisher Stadium on March 16 to host Villanova.
