PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Drexel stopped Lafayette softball's winning streak with 6-0 and 6-1 decisions on Thursday afternoon in non-league action.
Â
In the first game, the Leopards looked like they were going to get on the board early, putting
Natasha Miner (hit by pitch) and
Harlie Bickett (single) on with no outs, but Drexel pitcher Lindsay Nelson worked her way out of the inning.
Â
Lafayette never really threatened again until the sixth inning.
Kaili Reitano (single) and
Kinzi Van Wyk (double) reached with two outs in the inning, but Nelson retired
Julia Roman to end the inning. Nelson collected the win, scattering six Leopard hits to go along with four strikeouts.
Â
Drexel scored two runs each in the third, fourth and fifth innings as Ameryn Humble and Lily Meuninck combined to drive in four of the Dragons' six runs.
Â
Van Wyk, who threw the first three innings of the game, took the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts.
Â
In game two, Drexel scored four runs over the first two innings and pulled away to a 6-1 final. Drexel starter Jessica Schable limited Lafayette to four hits in the game while striking out seven.
Â
Two of the Leopards' hits came in the seventh inning. With two outs,
Bailey Langford doubled to extend the game. The next batter,
Jasmine Nguyen, drove in
Kristen Brown (Langford's pinch runner) to get the Leopards on the scoreboard.
Â
Jacqueline Cal was in the circle for the Leopards, surrendering five earned runs on eight hits over 4.1 innings.
Morrigan Gardiner, who also threw one inning of relief in the first game, finished things off in the circle and was not charged with a run in the final 1.2 innings. Â Â
Â
Next up for Lafayette is a three-game weekend series with Patriot League foe Bucknell. On Saturday, the Leopards will hold Senior Day ceremonies prior to the noon first pitch of the doubleheader. The series concludes with a single game at noon on Sunday.
