ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Lafayette College baseball team defeated Navy, 13-7, Sunday to claim its tenth Patriot League win of the season and win the regular season series with the Midshipmen.
The Leopards was led by senior
Dylan Minghini who went 1-for-2 with three runs and a team-leading three RBIs, and junior
Pete Ciuffreda who went 3-for-4 with a team-leading four runs and two RBIs. Starting pitcher senior
Kyle Subers went 3.2 innings, striking out five while junior
Nolan Morr picked up his second win of the season.
Lafayette (15-31, 10-11) took the early lead in the top of the first off a two-run home run by Minghini. The Leopards then plated four runs in the top of the third to take a 5-0 lead.
Navy (19-25, 10-15 PL) plated two runs of the game in the bottom of the third to pull within three of the Leopards. The Midshipmen then added two more in the bottom of the fourth to pull to the score to within a run, 5-4.
After Lafayette scored in the top of the fifth off a RBI sacrifice fly, Navy hit a two-run home run to send the game into the sixth inning tied 6-6.
The Lafayette Nine exploded to retake the lead in the top of the sixth. Freshman
Michael Zarrillo led off the inning with a double and two batters later, senior
Evan Kiah singled to advance Zarrillo to third. Sophomore
Justin Grech then doubled to advance Kiah and score Zarillo. A batter later, Dorighi singled to advance Grech, score Kiah and give Lafayette an 8-6 lead.
Ciuffreda then singled to advance Dorighi to third and score Grech. The junior then stole second leaving first open for Minghini who drew a walk. Ingram then singled with the bases loaded to score both Ciuffreda and Dorighi.
With Ingram on first and Minghini on second, junior
Patrick Vandenbergh walked to load the bases. The next batter Zarrillo walked to move up all runners and score Minghini. Freshman
Easton Brenner then hit a RBI sacrifice fly to bring Ingram home and give Lafayette a 13-6 lead.
The Midshipmen added a run in the bottom of the sixth to put the score at 13-7.
After an hour and a half rain delay, senior
Frank Craska and junior
Jacob Ciccone came in for a combined three scoreless innings to keep the Midshipmen off the board and secure the win for the Maroon and White.
Lafayette returns to action on Saturday, May 7 for a doubleheader at Holy Cross. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
