Leopards Drop Contest at Drexel

Lafayette starts conference play on Saturday

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Lafayette women's soccer team dropped its final non-conference match to Drexel University this afternoon at Vidas Athletic Complex.

The match began under rainy skies, but that did not deter the Dragons as less than three minutes into the first half a defensive miscue by the Leopards led to an empty net for Delaney Lappin, who easily put the ball into the goal. After a foul by Lafayette in the box in the ninth minute, Drexel was awarded a penalty kick.  The Dragons chose Lappin to take the shot, who sent the ball into the low left corner of the goal, out of the reach of Lafayette senior goalkeeper Natalie Neumann.

In the 71st minute, the Dragons added to their lead as a perfect cross by Elise Duffy found Kailey Horton, who chipped the ball into the goal.

Lafayette finished the afternoon with nine shots, six of which were on goal. Drexel also took nine shots, with seven on goal.  The Maroon and White were led by freshman April McDonald, who had three shots, two of them on goal. Senior Sara Oswald and senior Haley Pursel both recorded two shots, with one on goal for each. Freshman Katrina Santelli and sophomore Michaela Salvati each had one shot on goal.

Neumann played the first 45 minutes in goal for the Leopards and was replaced by junior Lindsay Dewar for the second half. Neumann had one save, and Dewar was credited with  three saves. Drexel began the match with Molly Piso in goal, who was credited with five saves and played 74 minutes.  She was replaced by Alexis Dooley, who played 16 minutes and recorded one save.

The Leopards return home on Saturday when they open Patriot League play against Boston University at 2 p.m.
