EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette College volleyball team made it five-straight victories over Lehigh after a 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-22, 25-19) victory Friday night in front of a raucous Kirby Sports Center crowd.
Â
The freshman duo of
Carol Ulichney and
Hannah Ehrich-Pollock each had 11 kills to lead the Lafayette attack. Ulichney had a double-double with 11 digs while Ehrich-Pollock hit .429.
Â
Lafayette found itself up by just one at 12-11 before the Leopards scored five of the next six points to take control of the set. Ulichney led the charge in the first, putting down five kills and hitting .444 in the opening frame.
Â
Lehigh would jump out to the early lead in the second, 15-13 before the Leopards erupted to score five-unanswered with Ulichney at the service line. The run was started by an Ehrich-Pollock kill before junior
Katie Weston made a fantastic play to dig out a ball that turned into a kill and force a Lehigh timeout.
Â
The visitors would answer with a 4-0 run of their own to regain the lead and steal the second.
Â
Lehigh would carry the momentum into the third, jumping out to a 10-5 lead to force a Lafayette timeout. Ehrich-Pollock stopped the run with a kill out of the break and begin the comeback.
Â
A 3-0 Lafayette run would make it a one-point game in the third after junior
Gracie Gibson put down a kill. A 4-0 Leopards run would sandwich a Lehigh point to give the Maroon and White the lead at 15-13. Three unanswered by Lehigh would make it 16-15 before back-to-back Ulichney kills gave Lafayette the lead right back.
Â
The third set saw nine ties and five lead changes and would ultimately end with a 3-0 Lafayette run and sophomore
Abby Nieporte's kill.
Â
Lafayette looked to end it in the fourth and opened the frame with five-unanswered to force an early Lehigh timeout. The Mountain Hawks would not be able to overcome the early deficit and the Leopards would put it away in four.
Â
Weston would tally 19 digs with four assists while Vitale added 43 assists and 11 digs for a double-double. Nieporte put down 12 kills with an ace while Gibson added eight kills and a block.
Â
