Leopards Battle American to a 2-2 Draw

April McDonald and Sara Oswald score goals

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Lafayette women's soccer team battled American to a 2-2 draw this afternoon at Reeves Field.

In the 28th minute, Lafayette's April McDonald was able to shake free of the defending Eagles and placed a shot to the left corner of the goal, past the outstretched arms of American goalie Julia Kato, giving the Maroon and White a 1-0 lead.

The Eagles responded just two minutes before halftime when off of a corner kick the ball came down to Olivia Simmons, who sent a shot past Lafayette senior goalkeeper Natalie Neumann, equalizing the match 1-1. Jordan Mahoney was credited with an assist on the goal.

In the second half, Lafayette again jumped out in front.  A pass by McDonald in the 76th minute found senior Sara Oswald, who headed the ball into the goal, giving the Leopards a 2-1 lead.  The goal was Oswald's team-leading fourth of the year.

American came back to tie the match in the 83rd minute. An Eagle corner kick was sent into the box and pinballed off of multiple players before finding Mahoney, who chipped a shot past Lafayette junior goalkeeper Lindsay Dewar. Izzy Kadzban was credited with an assist on the goal. Neither team was able to score again in the remaining seven minutes of the match.

Both Lafayette and American finished the contest with six shots, of which four shots were on goal for each team. The Leopards were led by McDonald who had three shots, with one resulting in a goal. Oswald had two shots, with one resulting in a goal.  Alexa Jindal had one shot on goal.

Neumann and Dewar again split time evenly in goal for the Maroon and White, with Dewar recording two saves. Their American counterpart, Julia Kato, played the full 90 minutes and recorded two saves.

The Leopards return home to Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium on Saturday to face the Greyhounds of Loyola Md. at 2 p.m.
