EASTON, Pa. - The electric atmosphere provided from the annual School Day Game helped propel Lafayette to a 59-57 win over American on Wednesday morning.
Junior guard
Makayla Andrews reached double figures for the 12th time this season, leading the Leopards with 19 points. Sophomore guard
Abby Antognoli netted 12 points, marking her third consecutive game in double figures.
American was led by leading scorer, junior forward Emily Johns (15), freshman forward Molly Lavin (11) and junior guard Anna Lemaster (10).
The Leopards jumped out on an early lead through the first quarter, heading to the break up 12-8. Lafayette would lead for the rest of the game from 6:01 in the first.
Lafayette had the 19-15 lead with just under two minutes remaining in the half, as Antognoli picked up a steal and drained a crowd-roaring step back jumpshot. Antognoli and the Leopards headed into the locker room with a 21-17 advantage.
The Leopards opened up the second half with a 7-0 run to jump out on a 28-17 lead with 5:51 remaining in the quarter. A
Kylie Favours three, jumper by Andrews and an Antognoli layup contributed to the spurt.
American spurred a 13-6 run from the start of the fourth to 6:07, putting the Eagles down two at 45-43.
Antognoli responded by draining two from the charity stripe and nailed a three, giving the Leopards the 50-43 lead with 4:09 remaining.
With the Leopards in the double bonus, Smith and Drummond each netted two free-throws, pushing the Leopards' lead to 54-44, with just over two and a half remaining.
American's Lauren Stack hit a jumper and two foul shots, to bring the Eagles within 54-48 with just over a minute remaining.
Antognoli went 2-for-2 from the line before Johns and Kayla Henning each hit a jumper, to make the score 56-52 with 45 seconds left,
The Eagles fouled again and Andrews converted both, giving the Leopards with 58-52 lead with 19 seconds remaining.
Lavin drained a three, putting the Eagles within three down 58-55 with nine seconds remaining. Lavin picked up a steal and Johns hit a jumper putting the Eagles down one with 2.4 seconds. John's shot nearly tied the game, but the shot was confirmed as a two-point bucket.
Andrews was immediately sent to the line when the Leopards inbounded the ball. She made the second of two attempts and Lafayette led 59-57 with just over one second remaining.Smith picked up a steal upon American's final inbound, sealing the Wednesday win.
Lafayette hosts The Rivalry against Lehigh on Saturday at 2 p.m.
