BOSTON, Mass.- Lafayette men's basketball dropped a 73-69 overtime conference matchup on Boston University on Thursday night at Case Gym.
Junior guard
Eric Sondberg led three Leopards in double figures, scoring a career-high 20 points in his first start of the season. Junior forwardÂ
Kyle Jenkins and sophomore guardÂ
CJ Fulton opened the scoring for the Leopards, both sinking 3-pointers around the 15-minute mark to lead 10-8. It was the Leopards' theme for the first half, shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes.
The Maroon and White made a 10-5 run at 10:47, 18-15, fueled by Sondberg's five points. BU followed with an 11-8 run that knotted the game at a 26-26 tie at the four-minute media timeout.
Sondberg netted a last-second 3-pointer on a Jenkins' assist to push Lafayette ahead 29-28 margin going into halftime. The Davidsonville, Md. native ended the game with 20 points, passing his previous high of 14 coming at home against Army on Monday.
The Leopards returned to the court with that same offensive fire, taking the first eight points of the second half. The Terriers made their first bucket of the half at 16:30, still trailing Lafayette 37-30.
TJ Berger hit a 3-pointer and a layup to keep the Maroon and White in the lead, 46-40, at 10:59. Two free throws apiece from Berger and freshman
Ryan Pettit, along with a Fulton 3-pointer, kept the Terriers at bay, 57-50, with five minutes left to play.
A Sondberg 3-pointer and a layup from
Justin Vander Baan would be the Leopards' final points in regulation, 62-52 at 4:35. Boston made a final 10-5 effort from then onwards to trigger overtime; six of those points were from Ethan Brittain-Watts, including three free throws and a layup at 2:19.
The Terriers outscored the Leopards 11-7 in the overtime period with seven
 points coming from Miles Brewster.
Boston shot 43 percent from the field overall
and were led by Brittain-Watts with 19 points. The hosts also added 25 points off their bench and had a 14-rebound advantage, including six on the offensive glass. Lafayette shot 38 percent from the field and went 10-for-10 from the charity stripe overall.
