EASTON, Pa.- The Lafayette College men's basketball team defeated Bucknell 74-67 in overtime inside Kirby Sports Center, earning its first conference win of the year on Sunday afternoon. Today's contest was the fourth straight game to go into extra minutes against the Bison.
The Leopards' lone senior,
Leo O'Boyle, tallied a career-high 24 points against Bucknell, shooting 72.7 percent from the floor. The Maroon and White shot 42.9 percent from the field overall, had 34 points in the paint and 24 points off of 18 turnovers. Freshman
Josh Rivera and junior
Kyle Jenkins joined their teammate in the afternoon achievements, netting a career-high 18 points with 8-for-15 field goals and nabbing a career-high 14 rebounds, respectively.
The first half saw back-and-forth action from both teams across the 20 minutes on the court. It concluded with sophomore captain
CJ Fulton hitting a last-second 3-pointer from deep for a score of 40-37 in favor of the Bison at the buzzer.
Jenkins got in on the action, opening the second half with a layup and a free throw at 19:15. Rivera started heating up as well, slamming back-to-back dunks at 16:49, keeping the Leopards within four, 50-46.
A slowdown in scoring by both teams would run down to the 11-minute mark, with only three Bucknell baskets made, 60-49. A third dunk from Rivera stopped the Bisons' largest lead of 60-51 at 10:50.
Lafayette made an 11-0 run down to 5:48, regaining the lead thanks to O'Boyle, Rivera and Jenkins, 62-60. A 2:01 free throw by Rivera tied the game up at 65-65.
The Leopards had one last chance on offense with 19 seconds left to play. Fulton drove into the lane and attempted a left-handed floater that came up just short at the horn.
The Maroon and White outscored the Bison 9-2 in the extra period. Rivera (4) and
TJ Berger (5) teamed up for all of Lafayette's points with just one minute on the clock, as the Bison only sank a pair of free throws with eight seconds remaining.
The 74-67 final signaled head coach
Mike Jordan's first victory on College Hill as well as the first conference victory this season.
The Leopards travel to Navy on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. tip-off in Annapolis, Md.
