Zaffanella's Early Goal Powers Leopards to Senior Day Victory

The Ellington, Conn. native scores her team-leading fifth goal of the season

EASTON, Pa. – Lafayette women's soccer defeated Colgate, 1-0, on Senior Day at a rain-soaked Gummeson Grounds: Home of Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.

The three senior members of Lafayette's class of 2024, Lindsay Dewar, Emily Coe and Lauren Cunningham, were honored in a ceremony prior to Saturday's match.

Lafayette struck quickly in the 13th minute, when a through-ball by Coe found freshman Nadia Zaffanella, who ripped a shot into the low right corner of the goal, past Colgate goalkeeper Alli Popham to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead. The goal was Zaffanella's team-leading fifth of the season, while the assist was Coe's team-leading fourth of the year.

With a steady rain coming down for a majority of the first half, neither team was able to muster another dangerous scoring opportunity for the ensuing 32 minutes. The Leopards finished the first half with five shots, while the Raiders had one. Lafayette recorded four corners in the first 45 minutes, while Colgate had none.

The second half played out much like the first half. As the rain intensified and field conditions deteriorated, both teams battled for possession. The best opportunity for either team to score was in the 85th minute, when Colgate's Ally Giovino blasted a shot to an open part of the goal, but a diving, acrobatic save by Dewar kept the Raiders off the board, and Lafayette secured the 1-0 victory.

Lafayette finished the evening with eight shots, six of which were on goal. Zaffanella led the Leopards with four shots, all of which were on goal. Colgate had six shots, with two on goal. The Leopards were awarded four corners, while the Raiders had two.

Lafayette senior goalkeeper Dewar (two saves) and her Colgate counterpart, Popham, both played the full 90 minutes.

The Leopards travel to second-place Bucknell on Saturday, to take on the Bison at 4 p.m.
