BALTIMORE, Md.- The Lafayette volleyball team was defeated by Loyola in five sets (25-22, 26-24, 25-17, 25-22, 15-8) on Saturday evening in Baltimore, Md.
The Greyhounds jumped out to an early 7-3 lead in the first set. Loyola led 24-19 later in the set before the Maroon and White went on a 3-0 streak to bring Lafayette within two points. Loyola ended up taking the first set (25-22) after a kill from Lauren Link which was assisted by Kacy Sekunda.
Loyola gained an 11-9 lead halfway through the second set. Lafayette took the lead at 15-14 after an attack error from the Greyhounds. The remainder of the set was very tight, but a kill from junior
Abby Nieporte gave the Leopards the set win. Nieporte finished the match with 14 kills, hitting .194. Freshman
Emma Patmon also finished the contest with 14 kills, while hitting .361.
After Loyola took the third set 25-17, the Leopards gained an early 12-9 lead in the fourth set after a kill from Nieporte. Loyola clawed its way back to 24-22, but freshman
Mackenzie Pitera ended the set with a kill assisted by senior
Katie Weston. Pitera finished the match with four kills, hitting .200.
The fifth set of action provided fans with four tie scores and one lead change. The match was tied at four apiece before Loyola went on a 3-0 run courtesy of kills from Kennedy Stevens, Sophie Brenner and Link. The Greyhounds would go on to take the final set 15-8.
The Leopards are back in action at 7 p.m. on Friday as they travel to West Point, N.Y. to face Army.
