Volleyball Sweeps Holy Cross

Nieporte and Feczko led the way with seven kills apiece

WORCESTER, MASS.- The Lafayette volleyball team swept Holy Cross (25-22, 25-19, 25-19) Saturday afternoon inside Blaney Gymnasium.

The Crusaders hopped out to an early 7-2 lead to begin the first set. Lafayette worked its way back to only being down three points with the score sat at 17-14. The Leopards then went on a 3-0 run courtesy of two attack errors from Holy Cross and a kill from freshman Irelynd Lorenzen. Lorenzen finished the match with six kills, hitting .500. The San Diego, Calif. native also added three aces with one solo block and one block assist. Fellow freshman Emma Patmon clinched the first set for the Maroon and White (25-22) with an ace.

Lafayette picked up right where it left off, grabbing an early 5-0 lead at the start of the second set. The Leopards were winning 19-11 before Holy Cross went on a 5-0 run to bring the Crusaders within striking distance. The Leopards held the Crusaders off to take the second set 25-19 after a kill from freshman Ally Feczko assisted by senior Alyssa Vitale. Feczko finished the match with seven kills, hitting a team-high .583.

The Maroon and White kept their momentum going in the third set. The Leopards held a 16-9 lead before a service error and an attack error from Holy Cross extended Lafayette's lead. Lafayette won the final set to secure its ninth win of the season, thanks to a kill from junior Abby Nieporte assisted by Vitale.

Setters Vitale and freshman Anna Van Wyk combining for 31 assists. Senior captain Katie Weston was the defensive standout for Lafayette, tallying 21 digs in the win.

The Leopards are back in action at 7 p.m. on Friday as they return to Kirby Sports Center to host Navy.
