HAMDEN, Conn.- Sophomore midfielder
Josephine van Wijk's golden goal led Lafayette field hockey to victory over Quinnipiac, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon. The Leopards continue on a seven-game win streak, outscoring those seven opponents 19-2, to move to 10-5 (4-1 PL) overall.
The Bobcats' Cameron Brower struck first at 9:38 in the opening quarter, assisted by Lucia Pompeo. Quinnipiac held that advantage for the following two periods, only to be halted when Leopard freshman
Stella Malinowski equalized, 1-1, with a penalty stroke goal at 53:35 in the fourth quarter.
The Leopards had two last-ditch corner opportunities just 30 seconds before the end of regulation, but were unable to convert. Throughout all of the previous meetings between the two programs, only three have resulted in extra minutes.
Lafayette forced the Bobcats to fight through four straight corners towards the halfway point of the 10-minute overtime period. Junior midfielder
Lineke Spaans would not be stopped this afternoon and made a long cut down the field once more about a minute later, earning yet another penalty corner, which would yield the golden goal.
Junior defender
India Ralph made an insert pass to freshman
Lena Thedrian, who sent a sweep towards van Wijk, poised for a deflection at the stroke mark. The Hague, Netherlands native got just enough of her stick on the ball to send it flying behind the Quinnipiac goalkeeper and secure the victory.
Lafayette held the advantage in total shots (24-11) and penalty corners (14-4).
Lafayette's senior goalkeeper
Emma Garvey made five saves, while her Bobcat counterpart, Cristina Torres, made 10.
The Leopards travel to Lehigh for the Rivalry on Friday for a 7 p.m. contest.
