EASTON, Pa.- The Lafayette volleyball team returned to Kirby Sports Center on Friday night and put together an authoritative win, sweeping Loyola (25-22, 25-22, 25-16).
Freshman
Emma Patmon led the Maroon and White on offense, accumulating seven kills throughout the match. Sophomore
Carol Ulichney and freshman
Irelynd Lorenzen both added six kills to Lafayette's attack. Senior
Alyssa Vitale did a great job setting up her teammates during the match, tallying 21 assists. Senior
Gracie Gibson was the standout defensive performer for the Leopards. The San Antonio, Texas native finished the match with two solo blocks and one block assist.
The Leopards jumped out to a 12-5 lead to begin the first set. Lafayette then went on a 4-0 run thanks to a kill from Ulichney and three attack errors by the Greyhounds. Gibson eventually end led the set with a kill assisted by Vitale.
The second set of play was very back-and-forth from both squads. Lafayette was down 15-13 before it went on a 2-0 run courtesy of kills from Patmon and Ulichney. With the score tied at 22 apiece, the Leopards went on a 3-0 run to take the second set 25-22.
Lafayette picked up right where it left off in the third set, gaining a 4-0 early lead. Loyola crawled its way back to 21-14 in favor of Lafayette which led to Lafayette taking a timeout. Lorenzen grabbed the Leopards their eighth win of the season with a kill on the final play of the match which was assisted by fellow freshman
Anna Van Wyk.
Lafayette is back in action at 4 p.m. on Sunday as it matches up against Colgate inside Kirby Sports Center.
