Leopards Advance to PL Final With OT Win at Loyola

Lafayette will face Boston U. on Saturday at 1 p.m.

BALTIMORE, Md.- The Lafayette men's soccer team defeated Loyola Md. 2-0 in overtime Tuesday evening in the Patriot League Tournament semifinal. Freshman Roy Biegon gave the Leopards the lead in the 107th minute off an assist from junior Connor Dawson, and senior captain Hale Lombard sealed the victory two minutes later off a feed from classmate Benji Grossi.

The No. 3 seed Leopards will now face No. 1 seed Boston U. in the Patriot League championship game at 1 p.m. on Saturday in Boston, Mass. It is the first appearance in the Patriot League Tournament final since the 2021 spring season.

In the first half of action, the Greyhounds outshot the Leopards 6-0. Junior goalkeeper Griffin Huff was called into action, making two saves to keep Loyola off the board.

Neither side could find the match's opening goal in the first half.

Nicholas Liebich recorded Lafayette's first shot in the 52nd minute, but his effort strayed wide of Dylan van der Walt's goal.

The Maroon and White outshot the Greyhounds 8-5 in the second half, but couldn't find the winner.

The first period of overtime was a midfield battle by both teams, as neither team recorded a shot in the 10-minute session.

Lafayette clinched its championship berth in the second period of overtime. In the 107th minute, Biegon broke the deadlock. Dawson had the ball on the left flank before he whipped a cross into Loyola's penalty area. Biegon made a beautiful run in between the Greyhounds center backs and headed home his third goal of the season.

Just two minutes later, Lombard sealed the victory for the Leopards. Grossi was sprinting down the left flank before he accelerated past his defender. The midfielder pulled the ball back towards the penalty spot and found Lombard. The Belleair Bluffs, Fla. native finished the ball with his first touch, giving van der Walt no chance.

The match ended 2-0 in favor of Lafayette.

The Leopards now await the Patriot League championship game, which will be played at Boston U. on Saturday at 1 p.m.
