STONY BROOK, N.Y. - The Lafayette baseball team dropped the final game of a three-game set with Stony Brook 9-3 on Sunday at Joe Nathan Field.Â
The Leopards jumped out ahead in the top of the first inning when junior Blaze Fadio singled to left field to lead off the game and then was followed by junior Justin Grech who drew a walk, putting runners on first and second. The next batter, senior Seif Ingram, lined a single into left center field, scoring Fadio from second and giving Lafayette a 1-0 lead.Â
In the bottom of the first, the Seawolves tied the game on an RBI-single to right field. Lafayette took the lead back in the second. The Leopards loaded the bases on three consecutive hit-by-pitches which again brought Ingram to the plate who drew a walk, giving the Maroon and White a 2-1 lead.
Stony Brook responded in the bottom of the fourth, tying the game 2-2.
In the fifth, the Seawolves scored six runs on a bases-loaded walk, a sac fly, an RBI-double and a three-run double, making the score 8-2.
Lafayette added a run in the sixth when sophomore Ben Petrone tripled to lead off the inning and came around to score on an RBI-groundout by freshman Ethan Swidler, bringing the score to 8-3.
Stony Brook extended its lead with a run in the seventh on an RBI-single to center field, bringing the final score to 9-3.
Freshman Eddie Smink was credited with the win for Stony Brook, and freshman Trace Florio took the loss for Lafayette.
The Leopards continue their season on Tuesday when they travel to Fordham for a game at 3 p.m.
