ANNAPOLIS, Md. - A fourth-quarter push by the Lafayette women's lacrosse team was not enough to overcome a 17-6 final against No. 24 Navy at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Wednesday evening.
The Mids flexed their national rank and athleticism, taking a 13-2 lead by halftime.
Clare Culligan (Q1, 11:21) and
Sara Rogers (Q2, 2:45) put the Leopards on the board early.
Lafayette's defensive line held Navy to two goals in the third quarter. Freshman
Charlotte Edwards tallied the eighth goal of her rookie campaign on a free-position shot at 5:43, still trailing 15-3.
The Mids found the net twice at the beginning of the final period. Lafayette's
Abby Romano scored at 5:10, prior to two last-minute goals from Culligan, who notched her second hat trick this season.
Navy held the advantage in draw controls (13-12), ground balls (19-12) and shots (37-18 and went 13-for-18 in clears compared to Lafayette's 11-for-19.
Lafayette's junior goalkeeper
Lexie Coldiron made five saves, while her Navy counterpart, Emma Richardell, made eight. Freshman
Kennedy Carr saw her first career minutes in the third period, making three saves on five shots faced.
The Leopards host Boston U. on Saturday at noon.
