NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.- The Lafayette women's lacrosse team was defeated by Iona on Wednesday afternoon on Mazzella Field, 11-10, in overtime.
Senior attacker Sarah Bennet paced the Leopards with three goals, one assist, five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Iona's Laine Walterson and Micaela Fitzpatrick put up tallies at 6:34 and 0:41 to nullify Lafayette's opening 2-0 lead to end the first quarter in a 2-2 draw. Bennett and
Charlotte Edwards had the first two goals for the Leopards at 11:08 and 7:09.
The Maroon and White edged the Gaels 4-3 in the second period, with scores from Bennett (10:51),
Sara Rogers (7:12),
Clare Culligan (6:21) and
Kerry Tuorto (3:54). Lafayette held a 6-5 advantage at halftime.
Each team found the net three times in the third quarter for a 9-8 Leopard lead with one period left to play. Bennett secured a hat trick at 7:54 in between goals by Rogers and
Abby Romano.
Edwards took the first score in the fourth quarter at 9:24. The freshman attacker was followed up by two Iona goals to force overtime after a 10-10 regulation draw.
With 16 seconds remaining in the extra minutes, Iona's Kira Varada found the net for an 11-10 final in favor of the Gaels.
Lafayette held the advantage in draw controls (13-12), ground balls (23-14), shots (36-26) and clears (19-24 to 18-23). The Leopards put back seven free position attempts, while the Gaels netted six.
Lafayette's junior goalkeeper
Lexie Coldiron made six saves, while her Gael counterpart, Sofia Votto, made 17.
The Leopards host Lehigh on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. for Alumni Day.
