Baseball Wins First Game of Three-Game Set Against Navy

Ciuffreda hits his 11th home run of the season

EASTON, Pa. – The Lafayette baseball team completed Saturday's suspended contest, defeating Navy 5-1 on Sunday. The Leopards dropped the other two games of the series to the Midshipmen 10-4 and 8-4.
 
In game one, which started on Saturday and was completed on Sunday, the Leopards scored first on a solo home run by junior Justin Grech in the third inning. Before the start of the bottom of the fourth inning, the game was suspended due to weather.

When play was resumed on Sunday, Lafayette extended its lead in the fourth on a solo home run by senior Seif Ingram to make the score 2-0.

Navy responded with a run in the top of the sixth on an RBI-single to left field by Kyle Rausch, bringing the score to 2-1.

The Leopards added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore Michael Zarrillo blasted a three-run home run down the right field line to extend the Lafayette lead to 5-1.

Freshman Pat Walega pitched a scoreless ninth, making the final score 5-1. Senior Alex Walsh started the game for the Leopards on the mound and collected his third win of the year. He pitched four scoreless innings, not surrendering a hit and striking out two. Nate Mitchell took the loss for Navy, pitching three innings, giving up two hits, one run and striking out two.

Game two of the series began with Navy scoring two runs in the first on an RBI-groundout by Rausch and an RBI-single to left field by Logan Keller.

Navy added another run in the top of the second on an RBI-double down the left field line by Henry Mitchell.

Lafayette got on the board in the bottom of the second, as freshman Ethan Swidler hit an RBI-groundout which allowed Ingram to score.

Navy added five runs to its tally in top of the third, scoring on a two-run double to right center by Brock Murtha, an RBI-double by Colin Smith and a two-run single by Eduardo Diaz, making the score 8-1.

Lafayette responded in the bottom half of the third with a sacrifice fly to left field by senior Pete Ciuffredda which scored junior Blaze Fadio. In the sixth, Lafayette added a run when Ingram belted a solo home run to left field, making the score 8-3. Lafayette scored again in the seventh on a solo home run by Fadio, which brought the final tally to 10-4.

Thomas Russell earned the win for Navy and Jackson Beattie picked up the save. Luke Craytor took the loss for the Leopards.

In the final game of the series, Navy again took the early lead, scoring two runs in the second on RBI-singles by Mitchell and Diaz. The Midshipmen scored again in the fourth, as Alex Smith hit a two-run double down the left field line to give Navy a 4-0 lead.

The Leopards got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by Ciuffredda to left field.

Navy scored another run in the fifth, two more in the sixth and a lone run in the seventh to make the score 8-1.

Lafayette plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI-single by senior Patrick Vandenbergh, an RBI-single by sophomore Easton Brenner and a passed ball which scored junior Michael Mallas, making the final 8-4.

Matthew Shirah picked up the win for Navy, pitching six innings, giving up two hits, one run and striking out seven. Landon Kruer earned the save, pitching three innings, giving up four hits, three runs and striking out four. Sophomore Joe Skapinetz took the loss, tossing 1.2 innings, giving up two hits, two runs and striking out two.

Lafayette is next in action when it hosts rival Lehigh on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
