PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – The Lafayette baseball team dropped its Liberty Bell Classic game against Villanova 10-5 on Tuesday at Villanova Ballpark.
Lafayette got going early in the first inning when senior
Seif Ingram hit a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed sophomore
Easton Brenner to score, giving the Leopards a 1-0 lead.
The Leopards extended their lead in the third after consecutive singles by Brenner and senior
Pete Ciuffreda put runners on first and second, and then sophomore
Michael Zarrillo drove in Brenner on a fielding error by the Wildcats. Later in the inning, Ciuffreda scored on a wild pitch, which made the tally 3-0.
The Maroon and White added two more runs in the fourth. Senior
Kyle Chmielewski led off the inning with a triple to left field and junior
Justin Grech walked. Both Chmielewksi and Grech scored on wild pitches, increasing the Leopards' lead to 5-0.
In the fifth, Villanova's offense came alive. The Wildcats scored six runs in the frame on a home run and a two-run single by Colin Quintano, a solo home run by Josue Valdez and a Lafayette error, to take the lead 6-5.
The Wildcats added four more runs in the eighth, scoring on sacrifice flys by Peter Giombetti and August Biggio, an RBI-double by Aidan Barry and a bases-loaded walk to Paul Cooke, which made the final score 10-5.
Patrick Montfort collected the win for Villanova, pitching 2.1 innings, not giving up a hit, surrendering a run and recording four strikeouts. Junior
Bo Planeta took the loss for the Leopards, pitching 0.2 innings, giving up two hits and four runs.
Lafayette is next in action on Wednesday when it hosts rival Lehigh at 3:30 p.m.
