WORCESTER, Mass. – The Lafayette baseball team won both games of a doubleheader 6-1 and 6-3 on Saturday at Holy Cross at Fitton Field.
In game one, neither team scored until the fourth inning, when Lafayette broke the scoreless tie with three runs in the frame. Senior
Pete Ciuffreda reached base on a Holy Cross error to lead off the inning. Sophomore
Michael Zarrillo followed with a walk and senior
Seif Ingram lined an RBI-double to left field. Sophomore
Kaleb Willis drew a walk, which loaded the bases for junior
Michael Mallas, who then ripped a two-run single to left field, which gave the Leopards a 3-0 lead.
The Leopards added another run to their lead in the fifth, when sophomore
Easton Brenner led off the frame with a single to center field, and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ingram drove in Brenner on an RBI-single, making the score 4-0.
Lafayette added two more runs in the sixth, scoring on a sacrifice fly to right field by Mallas and an RBI-double to right field by sophomore
Ben Petrone.
Freshman
Trace Florio pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh to secure Lafayette's 6-1 victory.
Senior
Alex Walsh collected his fourth win of the season for the Maroon and White, pitching 5.0 innings, giving up five hits, striking out four and not surrendering a run. Nate Chudy took the loss for the Crusaders, tossing 4.2 innings while allowed four runs on four hits while striking out eight.
The Leopards again scored first in game two. This time, an error by the Holy Cross third baseman allowed Ciuffreda to score. Later in the inning, Zarrillo scored on a passed ball, to give Lafayette a 2-0 lead.
Holy Cross responded in the bottom of the frame when Sean Scanlon scored on a wild pitch, making the score 2-1.
Ciuffreda singled to left field to lead off the third and came in to score on a sacrifice fly to left field by junior
Blaze Fadio.
Lafayette added another run to its lead when junior
Justin Grech blasted a home run to center field, to make the score 4-1. In the top of the fifth, Ciuffreda scored on a Crusaders' fielding error, which extended the Leopards' lead to 5-1.
Holy Cross countered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly to left field by Jake McElroy and solo home run by Scanlon to left center field. Lafayette added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI-single by Brenner, making the score 6-3.
Senior
Dylan Siesky closed out Lafayette's 6-3 victory, pitching a scoreless top of the ninth.
Sophomore
Joe Skapinetz earned his second win of the season, pitching 5.0 innings, giving up three runs on four hits while fanning five. Siesky collected his second save of the season, pitching a scoreless ninth and recording a strikeout. Scanlon took the loss for the Crusaders.
The Leopards are next in action when they travel to Seton Hall on Wednesday to take on the Pirates at 3:30 p.m.
