Strong First Inning Pushes Baseball to Win Over Army

Lafayette concludes its series with Army on Sunday at 10 a.m.

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Lafayette baseball team defeated Army 4-3 at Doubleday Field on Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader with the Black Kinghts. Game two of Saturday's doubleheader has been postponed to Sunday due to weather conditions in the region and is set to start at 10 a.m.

The Leopards jumped out to an early lead in top of the first, scoring two runs on bases-loaded walks doled out to junior Justin Grech and freshman John Ahler, which allowed sophomore Easton Brenner and senior Seif Ingram to score, respectively. Sophomore Michael Zarrillo scored on a wild pitch, giving the Maroon and White a 3-0 lead.

Lafayette added another run to its lead in the third when senior Kyle Chmielewski doubled to left field and then advanced to third on a fly out by junior Michael Mallas. Chmielewski came in to score on a wild pitch, extending the Leopards lead to 4-0

Army responded in the fourth inning when Ross Friedrick hit a solo home run to right field, cutting Lafayette's advantage to 4-1. The Black Kinghts tightened the score with two more runs in the fifth on a two-run double to left center field by Braden Golinski, to bring the tally to 4-3.

Senior Dylan Siesky pitched a scoreless ninth, closing out Lafayette's 4-3 win over the Black Knights.
