BOSTON, Mass. – After dropping an 8-0 final in game one, the Lafayette softball team re-grouped and fought its way to a 4-2 final in game two. The nightcap was highlighted by freshman
Megan Coyle's first career home run and a solid late-game pitching performance from sophomore
Morrigan Gardiner.
Â
In game two, Boston U. struck for three runs in the first off Gardiner. The sophomore scattered a double and two singles in the inning.
Â
Lafayette cut the deficit to one run in the top of the second. With
Paige Sandidge aboard, Coyle ripped the first pitch she saw down the left field line over the fence to get Leopards on the board, trailing 3-2. It was Coyle's first collegiate home run.
Â
The Terriers took back a run in the bottom half of the second, scoring on Kayla Roncin's RBI-triple for the 4-2 lead.
Â
Both Gardiner and BU starter Kasey Ricard sailed through the late innings, as neither allowed a hit after the third. Gardiner finished the game with four strikeouts and four walks over six innings while Ricard struck out 11 and issued two free passes.
Â
In the noon series opener, the Leopards' offense could never really get going. BU starter Allison Boaz limited Lafayette to a pair of hits. Senior
Kaili Reitano had the Leopards' first hit with a one-out double in the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, sophomore
Kaya Ciccone-Cozart added a one-out single.
Â
The host Terriers pushed across two runs in the second and one in the fourth inning when Nicole Amodio hit a solo home run for the 3-0 lead. Two more Terrier runs came plateward in the fifth inning, and then Boston U. closed out the game in the next inning. Caitlin Coker legged out a three-run, inside-the-park home run for the 8-0 final.
Â
Junior
Kailee Sawai was the Leopards' pitcher of record, allowing three earned runs over 4.1 innings. Classmate
Jacqueline Cal threw the final inning, giving up three earned runs on four hits with a strikeout. Boaz struck out five over six innings in the win.
Â
Lafayette and Boston U. close out the series at noon on Sunday.
