Late Goal Propels Leopards to Victory in Home Opener

Waechter scores goal for Lafayette at Gummeson Grounds

EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette women's soccer returned to Easton on Sunday for the inaugural match at Gummeson Grounds: Home of Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium, defeating Mount St. Mary's 1-0 on Community Day.

Lafayette dominated time of possession in the first half, though neither team was able to break away and score. The Leopards took three shots in the first 45 minutes, while Mount St. Mary's took two. Lafayette senior Lindsay Dewar and Mount St. Mary's Klil Keshwar both recorded two saves each.

The Leopards continued to control possession of the ball in the second half. In the 85th minute, the Maroon and White found the back of the net. A through-ball by freshman Nadia Zaffanella connected with junior Gretchen Waechter on the right side of the goal. Waechter curled a shot to the low left corner of the goal, past Keshwar, to give the Leopards a 1-0 lead with five minutes left to play. Lafayette continued to play strong defense, keeping the Mountaineers off the board for the remainder of the match in the 1-0 final.

Lafayette ended the day with nine shots, five of which were on goal. Mount St. Mary's had four shots, with three on goal. The Leopards earned 10 corners, while the Mountaineers had two. Both Waechter and Zaffanella recorded two shots for the Leopards, and senior Emily Coe, senior Sara Oswald, junior Alexa Jindal, junior Abby Miles and freshman Ava Murphy, all were credited with one shot each.

Dewar started the match for Lafayette and played the full 90 minutes, recording three saves. Keshwar also played the full 90 minutes, recording four saves. 

Prior to Sunday's contest, Lehigh Valley community youth participated in field-day activities with Lafayette student-athletes, coaches and staff putting them through their paces in a variety of sports skills.

The Leopards travel to Stony Brook, N.Y. on Thursday for a 3:30 p.m. match vs. the Seawolves.
