Aydlett’s Quality Finish Secures Second Consecutive Draw for the Leopards

Lafayette looks forward to Friday’s match against Siena

EASTON, Pa. –  Lafayette battled CAA foe Drexel to a 1-1 final on Monday night at Gummeson Grounds: Home of Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.

The match got off to a bit of a slow start. It was clear that both sides were feeling one another out looking for weaknesses in each other's game. In the 11th minute, Senior captain Hale Lombard had the best chance of the first half for the Leopards. Fellow senior Benji Grossi played a ball into the path of Lombard, but Lombard's header went over the crossbar leaving Drexel's keeper Alessandro Capogna relieved.

With 20 minutes to go in the first half, Drexel began to leave its footprint on the proceedings. The Dragons certainly had no issue with holding onto the ball as they accumulated 63 percent possession when the halftime whistle finally blew. Lafayette's attacking came through counter attacks.

The second half got off to a chippy start. Both sides committed a few fouls which set the tone for an epic finish.

In the 59th minute, junior Lawrence Aydlett put Lafayette in front with a beautiful finish. Grossi found himself in the right channel and picked his head up looking to supply into the box. His right-footed service curled towards the back stick where Aydlett was waiting to pounce. The Reistertown, Md. native didn't think twice before tucking the ball away with a one-time finish into the far side netting, leaving Capogna no chance.

As the game grew on, both sides had their fair shares of defensive mishaps but neither could capitalize on them.

In the 83rd minute, Julian Jordheim found Drexel's equalizer. Patrick Short stood over the ball prior to serving an in-swinging corner. Short's corner had plenty of pace and Jordheim was lurking in the penalty area ready to make a play on the ball. His headed effort left Leopard goalie Eric Axtman stranded with the game now level at 1-1.

Ben Weller had a chance to put the game to bed for Drexel on a breakaway, but Axtman stood his ground sharply and made a crucial save to keep the game tied in the 84th minute.

When the referee blew for fulltime the match ended with a score of 1-1.

The Leopards will be back in action for their first away match at 4 p.m. on Friday against Siena.
