Second Half Comeback Propels Leopards to Victory Over St. Joseph's

Zaffanella scores her first collegiate goal in 2-1 win

EASTON, Pa. - Lafayette women's soccer improved its record to 3-1 on the season, scoring two second-half goals to erase a halftime deficit and defeat St. Joseph's 2-1 on Thursday at Gummeson Grounds: Home of Mike Bourger '44 Field at Oaks Stadium.

The Hawks struck first in the 41st minute, when a cross into the box was deflected by a Leopard and went straight to Sam Dumont, who was right in front of the goal, and punched it in for the first goal of the game.

In the second half, Lafayette exhibited increased urgency on offense. The Leopards began their comeback in the 52nd minute, when freshman Nadia Zaffanella received a perfect pass from senior Emily Coe off of a give-and-go. Zaffanella chipped a shot into the wide-open goal, tying the score 1-1.

Lafayette took the lead just seven minutes later in the 59th minute. Zaffanella split two defenders with a through ball that found senior Sara Oswald, who rocketed a shot past the outstretched arms of the Hawks' goalkeeper, giving Lafayette a 2-1 lead.

The Lafayette defense controlled the remaining 31 minutes of the match, securing the 2-1 victory for the Maroon and White.

The Leopards finished the match with six shots, three of which were on goal. St. Joseph's had 11 shots, with six on goal. Lafayette was awarded two corners, while the Hawks had seven. Oswald recorded three shots, while Zaffanella and senior Alexa Jindal recorded two and one shots, respectively.

Senior Lindsay Dewar started the match for Lafayette and played the full 90 minutes, recording five saves. The St. Joseph's goalkeeper, Katie Cappelletti, also played 90 minutes and recorded two saves.

The Maroon and White travel to Jersey City, N.J.on Sunday to battle St. Peter's at noon at Jaroschak Field.
