NEW YORK, N.Y.– Sophomore midfielder
Josephine van Wijk led the Leopards with four points in a 3-2 defeat at Columbia on Sunday afternoon. The contest was delayed from the original noon start time to 12:45 p.m. due to poor weather conditions.
Both teams earned shots on goal early, but were left scoreless until the second period. Columbia's Lindsey Yu got on the board first at 20:15 in the second quarter.
In the third period, the Lions put back two follow-up goals at 31:50 and 37:16 to extend their advantage to 3-0. Van Wijk found the back of the net at 39:23, assisted by
Lineke Spaans and
Katie Gibb during a corner, trailing 3-1.
The Leopards closed the gap to one at the very end of the third quarter with the same perfectly executed Van Wijk penalty corner. The clock ran out during the play, but the Leopards finished before the ball left the circle.
With 15 minutes remaining to play, neither team could convert.
Lafayette held the advantage in total shots (21-9) and penalty corners (8-3).
Lafayette's goalkeepers
Raffi Fragomeni and
Emma Garvey split time today, each seeing one half and totaling four saves. Their Lion counterpart, Katie Wimmer, made nine.
